The story below broke my heart. I’m saddened by the passage of Amendment One in North Carolina. We should be seeking to protect all family units in our state, not further restrict the rights of some of our citizens.
No one should have to go through what this man went through when his partner passed away. Unfortunately, since the law does not offer the same protections to unmarried couples, this is the reality for those couples who haven’t prepared a basic estate plan.

As a local attorney, I can’t stress enough how timely (and critical!) this information is for your audience. Many young adults in our area will soon be heading off to college or traveling abroad without the 3 key documents (Advance Health Care Directive, HIPAA Form and Financial Power of Attorney) they need for mom or dad to oversee their care if they become ill or seriously injured and unable to speak for themselves.

This weekend, the NCBA Young Lawyers Division Committee on Law and Aging hosted an event called “Project Grace.” Teams of attorneys, paralegals and witnesses met with members of the community from 8AM – 2PM Saturday at Campbell Law School in downtown Raleigh. Everyone was welcome to attend and meet with an attorney to have Health Care Powers of Attorney and Living Wills prepared for FREE.
It was a great event and we had a pretty good turnout despite the rain. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take any pictures. Make sure to keep an eye out for the next “Project Grace!”
